Get in touch today →Family Mediation is a process which helps separating couples to resolve the issues that they face following the breakdown of their relationship – usually relating to arrangements for children or their future finances or both.
It is a kind process which aims for early resolution of conflict and which is future focused.
Family Mediation is a voluntary process and so can not be imposed on anybody who does not wish to take part.
A professionally trained, impartial family mediator will attend a number of meetings with the separating couple to encourage discussion in a structured and balanced way.
All meetings held during the mediation process will be in a neutral and safe environment. The process is confidential and in most circumstances discussions held can not be referred to or relied upon outside of the mediation meetings.
An agreement can only be made during mediation by the couple participating in the process. The mediator will not make any decision for them.
Any agreement made during mediation will not be binding but can be made legally binding with an application to the Court.
Mediation is not an easy option but it is usually less stressful, much quicker and more cost effective than alternative options, such as legal proceedings. It also gives couples a chance to make decisions for themselves about their future.
Many couples find that mediation helps them to have a good relationship after separation and research shows it produces a better outcome for children.
